8 things you didn’t know about Pole Dance.

morgana-festugato-pole-dance-photography-005I’ve been addicted to Pole Dancing for 3 years now, it was love at first sight! Long ago I wanted to try it, but the barriers put up by society were there, and Pole Dance suffered – and still suffers – a lot of prejudice. Many people relate Pole Dance directly to Strip-Tease and vice versa. I arrived in Los Cabos and started looking for gyms around the city. It didn’t take me long to find a school of Pole Dance close by. My excitement was such that it spread to my daughters and we all began to train together. The day after our first lesson was remarkable… We were simply exhausted and sore from the first lesson. And happy. Very happy. Even euphoric. I changed my life and of course the life of my family, who now, between a wave and another, talking about surfing, they had to see the Pole videos too… Not bad! Have you seen a performance yet?No… it’s not strip-tease. No… it is not vulgar. It is a sport, a dance and one of the most complete exercises I know. As a matter of fact, Pole Dance began over 800 years ago in India with mallakhamba, used by wrestlers for physical training, while in China it was used by circus performers. For the past 5 years the Pole Dance community began to expand and now there are already numerous official meetings and competitions around the world, with more and more people practicing every day. It’s a fun and complete workout. Now one of my daughters became an instructor and I keep going to classes for fun and exercise. You do not have to do hard tricks, whatever age you are, whatever body you have, it does not matter!

Here are 8 things you didn’t know about Pole Dancing:

1- There’s a world championship.

World Pole Dance Championships is one of the biggest contests around the world. The first one happened in 2005 bringing together Pole athletes from over 26 countries. Their intention was to raise awareness and changing public perception of Pole Dance as a sport fitness. There are many championships happening every year in many countries!

2- It Hurts

When you first start practicing it your body is not used to the movements of the exercises so your body aches for the first weeks of practice. Bruises are inevitable though you get used to it!

3- It’s super healthy

Pole dancing is a sport, therefore it has infinite benefits! As a matter of fact, regular physical activity can help you prevent or manage many health problems such as depression, stroke and obesity to name a few.

4- Boosts confidence

Just as any type of exercise, Pole Dance improves your mood dramatically. Exercising stimulates many chemicals in your brain making you feel happier and more relaxed. When practicing you start to notice improvements in your physical appearance too boosting your confidence and self-esteem.

5- It doesn’t have to be sexy

Forget all your old ideas about Pole Dance. It does not have to be sexy! It is merely an exercise that tones and strengthens your body! As it is with dancing, you are free to do whatever you want with it!

6- You don’t have to be strong

A big misconception people have towards Pole Dance is that you have to be strong to practice it. Wrong! There are so many tricks for all levels! But still, you definitely get stronger and stronger as you practice it regularly!

7- Men Practice Pole Dance

Pole Dance is not just for women! Men actually started practicing it before women did! It’s a heck of a workout and more and more men are noticing it and starting to practice it.

8- It’s harder than you think

When we look at a Pole athlete and how she moves with such fluidity it makes you thinks it is easy, but the reality is that her fluidity is the result of hours and hours of training and dedication.

Who is up to try it?
